FILTRATION APPLICATIONS

Rare Elements Refining

Aluminium Recycling

Aluminium recycling processes generate wastewater and slurries containing fines, oxides, and reaction byproducts that must be removed to enable reuse or compliant discharge. DrM filtration systems are used to separate these suspended solids from caustic or acidic wash waters, improving clarity and reducing environmental impact. Their enclosed, automated operation supports safe handling of reactive materials while minimizing operator exposure and maintenance requirements.

Bauxite and Alumina

The Bayer process for refining bauxite into alumina generates red mud and other fine particulate byproducts that require separation during clarification and washing steps. DrM candle filters are used to improve the recovery of dissolved sodium aluminate and reduce residual solids in filtrate streams. Their robust design handles high solids loads and aggressive pH conditions, while automated operation and optional heel volume recovery support efficiency in continuous alumina refining.

Catalyst Recovery

Catalyst recovery is essential in hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processes used across the mining industry. DrM filtration systems provide safe, closed-system recovery of powdered catalysts such as nickel, cobalt, or platinum-group metals. These filters are used to clarify process liquids, regenerate catalyst solutions, or recover valuable solids from leachate streams. Dry or slurry discharge options, along with corrosion-resistant construction, make them ideal for aggressive and high-value recovery environments.

Copper Recovery

In non-ferrous smelters, copper and other metals are released in off-gases and captured in wet scrubbers, resulting in acidic process liquids loaded with metal salts. DrM filtration systems are used to separate these suspended solids, enabling recovery of valuable metal-rich particles while producing clarified acid streams suitable for reuse or concentration. With enclosed, fully automated operation and high cake dryness, these systems help improve metal yield, reduce waste, and support environmentally responsible smelting practices.

Leaching

Leaching processes are widely used in metal extraction to dissolve valuable elements from ore using acidic or alkaline solutions. DrM filtration systems are employed to separate undissolved solids from pregnant leach solutions, or to clarify precipitation slurries after impurity removal. Their fully enclosed design improves safety when handling aggressive slurries, and the filters support continuous or batch operations with options for cake washing and drying. This ensures consistent filtrate clarity and enhances recovery efficiency in downstream solvent extraction or crystallization steps.

Lithium Carbonate

Lithium carbonate production from spodumene ore or brine requires reliable solid-liquid separation during sulphate purification, impurity precipitation, and bicarbonate polishing stages. DrM candle filters are used to remove fine solids generated during magnesium and calcium precipitation, as well as during lithium carbonate crystallization. Their high filtration efficiency protects ion exchange and downstream purification circuits from fouling. Integrated cake washing and low hold-up volume minimize lithium losses and allow solids to be directed to tailings without returning valuable product to the leach circuit. This ensures stable operation and consistent carbonate purity in both hard rock and brine-based refining routes.

Lithium Hydroxide

Battery-grade lithium hydroxide production requires advanced purification and polishing steps to meet increasingly stringent cathode material specifications. DrM filtration systems are applied in lithium sulphate purification, hydroxide precipitation, and guard filtration duties to remove fine particulates and metallic impurities before crystallization and drying. With precise solids capture down to sub-micron levels, automated cake discharge, and optional polishing configurations, DrM filters support high-purity lithium hydroxide production for EV and energy storage applications. Their enclosed operation and low product loss make them well suited for modern hard rock conversion plants and next-generation refining facilities.

Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) and Conversion

Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) is emerging as a key technology to meet the growing demand for battery-grade lithium from brines. DrM FUNDABAC® and CONTIBAC® filters are integrated into critical steps such as brine clarification, impurity removal after magnesium and calcium precipitation, and polishing before lithium carbonate or hydroxide crystallization. Their enclosed and automated operation ensures safe handling of corrosive and scaling-prone streams while reducing chemical consumption through efficient cake washing. This makes DrM filtration systems a cost-effective and sustainable choice for modern lithium production projects.

Nickel

Nickel refining processes include pressure acid leaching, hydroxide precipitation, and impurity removal that generate challenging slurries with abrasive or chemically aggressive solids. DrM filtration systems separate nickel hydroxide, gypsum, or silica fines from sulfate or chloride solutions, protecting downstream refining equipment and improving yield. Their robust filter elements and corrosion-resistant construction enable long operating cycles in hot, low pH environments. Automated discharge and backflush functions reduce maintenance and support stable operation in hydrometallurgical flowsheets.

Non-Ferrous Metals

Non-ferrous metal smelting and refining, including copper, zinc, and lead, produces acidic wash waters, flue gas condensates, and slurry streams rich in fine particulates. DrM filtration systems are used to recover valuable metal compounds and produce clarified acids suitable for reuse or sale. Their fully enclosed, automated operation minimizes chemical exposure and waste while allowing dry cake or slurry discharge based on process needs. Integration into off-gas treatment or effluent recovery lines improves environmental performance and material recovery rates.

Potassium Nitrate

In potassium nitrate production, filtration is required after crystallization or impurity removal to separate solid KNO₃ from saturated brines or contaminated streams. DrM candle filters deliver consistent clarification even with temperature-sensitive or scaling-prone slurries, ensuring a clean product stream for drying or further concentration. Their precision cloth design captures fine particles while maintaining high flow rates and low residual moisture in the filter cake. With automated operation and minimal footprint, they support both large-scale fertilizer production and specialty nitrate applications.

Rare Earth

Rare earth elements (REEs) are chemically similar and difficult to separate, requiring multiple solid-liquid separation steps during processing. After ore digestion using acid or alkaline solutions, DrM filtration systems are used to remove insoluble gangue materials from the RE-rich liquor. Corrosion-resistant filter internals and fine-pore filter media help maximize recovery and reduce loss. For cerium separation and brine clarification, CONTIBAC® filters are also used in thickening and polishing duties, offering high throughput and reliable operation in aggressive, high-temperature environments.

Steel Pickling & Galvanizing

In steel surface treatment, filtration is used to remove iron salts, oxides, and other solids from spent pickling or galvanizing solutions. DrM candle filters operate in closed loops to clarify acid-based baths or rinse waters, enabling their reuse or safe discharge. Their corrosion-resistant construction and ability to handle high temperatures and low pH make them a strong fit for continuous metal processing lines. Automatic cake discharge reduces downtime and operator exposure in harsh chemical environments.

Titanium Dioxide

Titanium dioxide production by sulfate or chloride processes generates large volumes of slurries that require efficient solid-liquid separation. DrM filtration systems are used to clarify leach solutions, remove residual titanium salts, or separate iron and other precipitated impurities. With fine filter cloths and enclosed operation, they achieve high clarity filtrate while minimizing product loss. Their compatibility with acidic, abrasive, and high-viscosity media makes them suitable for both pigment-grade and high-purity TiO₂ applications.

Zeolites

Zeolite synthesis involves precipitation and crystallization processes that produce slurries containing unreacted silica, alumina, or template agents. DrM candle filters offer consistent clarification during intermediate separation or final product recovery. Their closed design and optional cake washing improve product purity and reduce process waste. These systems operate efficiently in both batch and continuous setups, supporting high-purity synthetic zeolite manufacturing in chemical and refining industries.
