How does candle filtration protect membranes in chlor-alkali brine polishing?

DrM Group has successfully delivered two FUNDABAC® candle filters to a client in Egypt for use in chlor-alkali brine polishing.

In modern membrane-based chlor-alkali processes, electrolyser membranes are highly sensitive to suspended solids. Even low levels of particulate contamination can negatively impact cell performance, membrane lifetime, and overall plant stability. As a result, effective brine polishing is a critical step upstream of the membrane cells.

FUNDABAC® candle filters are widely applied in this duty, providing reliable removal of fine solids and consistently high brine clarity. For this project, the system was supplied with dry cake discharge, enabling efficient solids removal while minimising brine losses and reducing manual intervention.

The filters were designed with materials compatible with aggressive chlor-alkali brine environments, including high-performance plastics, rubber-lined components, and titanium, ensuring long-term corrosion resistance and operational reliability.

By combining enclosed, fully automated operation with dependable solids discharge and high filtrate quality, FUNDABAC® filters support stable membrane operation, extended membrane lifetime, and reduced maintenance requirements in chlor-alkali production.
