FILTRATION APPLICATIONS

Food & Nutrients

Fatty Acids

Fatty acid production involves hydrogenation of edible oils using solid catalysts such as Raney nickel or Pd-on-carbon. Filtration systems are used to remove these catalysts after reaction, improving product quality and enabling catalyst reuse. Their closed design prevents operator exposure to flammable or pyrophoric solids, and the heel volume filtration feature allows for full batch processing with minimal hold-up. By eliminating precoat stages and simplifying cake discharge, FUNDABAC® systems increase productivity and reduce waste in fatty acid plants worldwide.

Lactose

Lactose is a byproduct of dairy manufacturing and is widely used in the pharmaceutical and food industries. During purification, the lactose syrup must be clarified after treatment with lime and activated carbon. DrM filters are ideal for this polishing step, offering closed-system operation, optional cake washing, and dry discharge of filter aid residues. With no need for precoating and high filtration rates, they support consistent production of pharmaceutical-grade lactose while minimizing product loss and waste.

Sugars & Sweeteners

Filtration plays a critical role in refining sugar and producing high-purity sweeteners such as glucose, fructose, or stevia extracts. FUNDABAC® filters are used in polishing steps to remove insoluble particles, decolorizing agents, and impurities after ion exchange or activated carbon treatment. Their closed, hygienic design supports food-grade compliance, while the ability to discharge as slurry or dry cake helps adapt to different process setups. The system’s scalability and consistent performance make it suitable for both standard and specialty sweetener production.

Vegetable Oil

In vegetable oil refining, filtration is used to remove bleaching earth, catalysts, and fine impurities after hardening, degumming, neutralization or winterization. Filtration systems are commonly used in hydrogenation stages to separate solid catalysts and provide cleaner oil for downstream steps. The filter’s enclosed design improves safety, reduces fire risk, and supports recovery of expensive catalysts. With automatic operation, backflush options, and flexible discharge modes, FUNDABAC® systems help streamline operations in edible oil processing and specialty fat production.

Food Additives

Pectin extraction from citrus peel produces a pectin solution in water that must be clarified of fibrous plant residue before concentration into a food-grade powder. FUNDABAC® filters separate these impurities in a single closed step, discharging as dry cake or slurry depending on process requirements, with minimal waste for disposal. The closed, hygienic design and CIP/SIP compatibility support food-grade production standards while keeping maintenance low. The same filtration principle extends to other food additive processes, from emulsifiers to stabilizers, wherever fine solids must be separated from a liquid phase.

Yeast

Nutritional yeast, yeast extracts, and single-cell proteins are produced by fermentation, then separated from the spent fermentation broth before drying or further processing. FUNDABAC® and STERIBAC filters clarify this broth in a single closed step, isolating the yeast cells while protecting product purity from contamination. STERIBAC’s hygienic design, with smooth surfaces and CIP/SIP compatibility, meets the sanitary standards required in food-grade yeast production. Dry cake discharge and the absence of moving parts keep changeover fast and maintenance costs low.
